The City of Marietta Georgia

History

The City of Marietta Georgia begins with a few homes along an old Indian trial.  With the vision of the city’s first postmaster, James Anderson, Marietta’s town square design is realized.  Three years after Marietta is named the county seat of Cobb County, economic disaster strikes the area, but Marietta is preserved due to Stephen Long’s choice to base here while grading and building the Western and Atlantic Railroad which linked the south to the northwest. Later headquarters for the railroad work is removed to Atlanta and Marietta became just a rail stop.  Later wealthy plantation owners, like John Glover, corroborated and began to invest and build.  With the good fortune of the Georgia Military Institute’s choice to headquarter in Marietta, the population grew, albeit through difficult circumstances, and the city blossomed.  Then came the War Between the States…

To learn more, visit the Kennesaw House, the Marietta Museum of History, home to three galleries packed with a variety of interesting treasures. The Home life Gallery is home to the museum's 19th and 20th Century clothing collection, as well as a variety of “entertaining” inventions. The Civil War Gallery features replica Civil War uniforms, authentic weapons and ammunition, and displays telling the story of a group of Yankee spies who planned to steal the steam engine called "The General." The third gallery is the General History gallery which features information on the displacement of the Native Americans, the small part Cobb County had in the Gold Rush, early inventions, early Marietta leaders, the establishment of Lockheed/Martin and more.

The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00 PM and on Sunday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.  Call (770) 528-0430 for more information, or visit the website: www.mariettahistory.org
